About St. Gabriel’s

St. Gabriel’s School was founded in 1924 in the Petworth Section of Washington, D.C., as a K–8 private school.

The school officially opened on September 26, 1924, with 373 students, taught by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Next, the Convent was completed on August 22, 1925, and the Bishop and Priest associates moved into the Rectory on October 28, 1925.

The culmination of Bishop McNamara’s Plan was the groundbreaking for Saint Gabriel Church on September 23, 1929. The church cornerstone was laid on March 16, 1930.

Over the years, St. Gabriel’s School has educated thousands of graduates who often share fond memories of academics, religion, school spirit, CYO sports, and character development from their Catholic School days. Attending St. Gabriel’s School went beyond school pride — the St. Gabriel's family was rooted in faith, service, and a commitment to living out Cultural and Ethical Values in everyday life.

St. Gabriel’s School closed in 2006. The shared identity, values, and enthusiasm that unite former students, staff, and families from a faith-based educational community carry on through memories and gatherings.
